The Spirit of Woodstock

In recent times, the Rodarte collection have gone ethereal and soulful, with an excess of flounces and ruffles. This time, for SS17 Kate and Laura Mulleavy take their inspiration from summer wild flowers and buzzing bees, with gold flecks are scattered like pollen over dresses of chiffon and lace, and flowers on fuchsia-hued sequin embroidered dresses and printed silks.

Another inspiration point for the Mulleavy sisters is Janis Joplin in the documentaries about Woodstock. Overpowering and deeply vulnerable, Janis had a devastatingly original voice, but was also a painter, dancer and music arranger. Her fans referred to her stage presence as “electric”. At the height of her career, she was known as “The Queen of Psychedelic Soul.”

“It’s not necessarily about the way she dressed but it’s more like her attitude and spirit,” said Kate Mulleavy. You could detect more than the spirit of Joplin – it was in the fringed and patchworked leathers, and the collaged Mongolian fluffy jackets belted at the waist.
